Popcorn

Went out with Rafe last night and we were chatting about weight and stuff, one of the problems I have found at work is that a food vending machine has been installed in our tea room, and the draw of a pie / pasty / sausage roll at 3 in the morning is too much, it never stops at 1 though. Its also the bar of chocolate as I pass it, its too easy. Rafe suggested getting a hot air popcorn maker I had never heard of these so I’m looking forward to ordering one a little later today! I really cant fault the logic behind this, its a snack with next to nothing in it, as long as you don’t cover it in butter, toffee sauce, sugar etc, its cheap, and its quick, so for me this is basically win, win! I’ll let you know how it pans out and probably be offering everyone fresh popcorn!

As for riding, I will be out tomorrow afternoon, I have managed to trap a nerve in my neck and turning it to the left is causing some pain at the moment, its been getting better each day, so lets hope tomorrow we are back to full strength!

*Edit at 0950am, Just ordered then! Hopefully get it in the next couple of days

* Edit 1540 After having the point “Just say no” made several times today, and last night I felt I needed to add a graphic, If you happen to be from the BBC, I pay my TV licence so that clearly allows me to infringe copyright on your pictures :)

Just added a new goal and got round to adding a couple of routes.

Chatting about weight whilst I ate pub food and polished off three pints of pear cider!

I just looked it up, about 20 calories per cup for air-popped corn. You’d have to eat 15 cups for one sausage roll! That’s not a challenge ;) But it is a lot of popcorn.

A word of warning, whatever bowl you use to catch the popped corn in, it’ll probably not be big enough! I speak from experience on this. I now use a Quality Street tin, though careful because they get hot with the hot air.

Sorry about the trapped nerve, I’ll be more gentle next time ;)

Sod it, I’m going to have to go downstairs and pop some corn now…

Funny story, the young (19) year old we employ saw me making popcorn just before Christmas. “what you doing?”, “making popcorn Andy”, “wow, it just popped”, “yes Andy, that’s why it’s called popcorn”, “what’s it made of?”, “corn Andy”. He’s a lovely lad, does keep us all amused.

    Rafe…Pear cider…..that’s wrong…Cider is apples…..

  4. By Joby, January 27, 2010 @ 2:09 pm

    LOL!
I’m just in the middle of editing my theme so that it shows what I’ve eaten for that day – have a look later at todays post and you’ll get an incling of how much I am starving myself – but rest assured Matt – your not alone.

We have a tuck shop at work and when I’m hungry – there’s nothing better than tucking into an 87 calorie single biscuit!!

  5. By Matt, January 27, 2010 @ 2:11 pm

Rafe, the sausage rolls we have in the machines are “Peters Jumbo” ones at they pack an amazing 564 calories, meaning I could have around 28 bowls of popcorn!
Jesus, why are these sausage rolls and stuff not stamped with a government health warning?!

John, am I right in thinking pear cider is also called “Perry”

  6. By Phill, January 27, 2010 @ 2:12 pm

I don’t care what you tell me. You can not make popcorn out of hot air. You’ll be telling me that Slimfast is a meal replacement next. Sheesh man.

  7. By Matt, January 27, 2010 @ 2:16 pm

Joby, I have never been so hungry, but apprently it will only be a couple of weeks till it sorts it self out. These vending machine / tuck shops are a nightmare!! The popcorn maker was only £20 delivered from play.com. I know I will get away with it at work!

Will let you know about popcorn and hot air soon Phill, and welcome to the blog! Not sure anyone could call slim fast a meal replacement though! Still I’m lead to believe it is healthy and nutritious!

  8. By Joby, January 27, 2010 @ 2:21 pm

Recently I’ve never been so hungry too so your not alone.

The simple math is – eat less than your body needs to lose weight. A pound of fat is roughly 3,500 calories (its somewhere on the tinterweb).

Your body burns around 2,700 calories a day.

Eat 2,200 calories per day and you should lose a pound a week.

Add exercise to that and it’ll probably be more?

Remember the old song by Grange Hill? “Just Say No, No, Just Say No!”

I’m coming towards the end of my weight cycle now – a finishing line is in sight for me. John and Crimmey are already at their goals and are enjoying mad miles!

I can’t imagine eating a cup of popcorn is going to give you the energy you need to get through the day – but if it does – let me know… this last few pounds is driving me insane.

  9. By Matt, January 27, 2010 @ 2:26 pm

the popcorn was not for energy, but to snack on, instead of the 3am sausage roll. Making a lot of changes at the moment round the diet so will be good to see how it fits it really.

  10. By Joby, January 27, 2010 @ 2:29 pm

Sorry, but I now have the song 3am by KLF in my head – and am changing the lyrics to incorporate “sausage roll” ;)

It takes a hell of an effort to completely change your diet and your on the right road matey :)

Pear cider is nice. Was drinking proper apple cider on Saturday.

Three pub meals (one a three courser), 6 pints of cider and some chocolate since my last weigh-in. Not got high hopes for a loss tomorrow!

Joby, the popcorn was merely to give Matt something to snack on rather than the bad stuff in the vending machine or a grab-bag of fruit pastilles (yum!). The popcorn satisfies cravings or idle hands with virtually no calories or nasty fats/sugars etc.

  12. By Joby, January 27, 2010 @ 2:58 pm

Wanking satisfies idle hands – and burns calories too ;)

  13. By Phill, January 27, 2010 @ 3:14 pm

Popcorn’s a good low-cal snack as you can’t really digest it. BUT … thanks to that exact characteristic and the fact it’s got lots of empty space in it… it doesn’t half give you a floppy bottom, so dont’ say I didn’t warn you.

Joby: and renders you sluggish and therefore less likely to run to the fridge. I heard somewhere.

  14. By Joby, January 27, 2010 @ 3:19 pm

You are correct – a scientifically proven fact.

infact – I’m sluggish at the moment and I’m sat at my desk… …

  15. By Lost, January 27, 2010 @ 5:52 pm

You are indeed correct on the definition of Perry. It sure is another name for pear cider.

Popcorn is the best. Though, like Rafe, I need to eat tonnes of it once I start making it. I love the salted stuff and can quite easily polish off a mammoth bowl.

@Joby: does that not make you an actual slug? ;) lol.

@phill: surely this is a man thing as I have no trouble at all

  16. By Matt, January 27, 2010 @ 6:33 pm

Thanks for the warning Phill! I wont expand on it, but lets just say by body is rebelling with all this veg and Orange Juice as it is ;)

Wifey and Daughter regularly make popcorn, they make it in a pan on the stove. Spawn of Satan loves it, but he does get a bit, er, how shal I put it, testy, when it all runs out.

My struggle here at work is the sandwich van. I stopped visiting it completely, cold turkey stylee when I started this thing. I now have Shredded Wheat or porridge.

When I get home I have one of wifey’s cooked dinners. That’s my scoff for the day.

The other drama is TV time when the kids are in bed. That’s when I want to snack, so I have fruit. It’s a poor substitute for my home made Pakora, Sheekh Kebabs, Shami Kebabs and Tandoori Chicken with Yoghurt dip etc, but them’s the breaks.

  18. By Matt, January 28, 2010 @ 7:23 am

Im actually enjoying the porridge right now clive!, bit of a first again this morning, I took the missus to work today as I need the car and normally I drop her off and pop down the road to grab a drive-thru dirty breakfast, but not today…I just said NO!
Fear not with the kebabs, they are a massive weakness of mine, even sober(!) but if you go for the grilled chicken one, with salad but no mayo / chilli sauce its actually not too bad for you, so thats a bit of a result!

  19. By Phill, January 28, 2010 @ 9:43 am

My personal mantra (and I do have to follow a strict dit regime as I’m diabetic, 20 years and no deterioration yet) is … “It’s the habits that kill you, not the treats.”
I treated myself to a cream cake yestrday. You can have a kebab now and again, but eat well day-to-day and you’ll manage your weight. I lose and gain weight very slowly because I eat similarly each day, no binges, no starvation.
ANd I love porrige too. I dont have time for it on workdays but at weekends (when I go for longer between meals anyway) it’s my favourite start to the day!

  20. By Clive Chapman, January 28, 2010 @ 10:59 am

Well done on the will power Matt!

Phill, “it’s the habits that kill you not the treats”. I like that and am going to shamelessy steal it for my own use!
